Description
Fear is a natural emotion that exists in every moment of the lives of humans and other living beings, from birth to death. Although it manifests in different ages, cultures, and forms, it has become a part of life by influencing people's development processes. Horror cinema has become a vast industry by visualizing the feeling of fear that individuals experience throughout their lives. Although the story and characters are prioritized in horror films, special effects makeup plays a crucial role in creating these characters effectively. The art of special effects makeup is as old as cinema itself. In the early years of cinema, special effects makeup was done by hand, later incorporating prosthetic materials. Today, both traditional hand-made special effects makeup and computer-aided makeup are used together. This situation has sparked debates about which method is more effective. In the scope of the research, a survey was conducted with 1000 participants to measure the perception of special effects makeup in horror cinema. According to the survey results, 92.2% of the participants stated that makeup is very important in horror films; 27.4% wanted to see wound and burn makeup; and 26.9% wanted to see blood-effect makeup. Additionally, 51.5% of the participants believed that handmade makeup always looks better and more realistic, and 65.4% of the participants indicated that computer-aided makeup cannot replace traditional makeup. According to the survey results, 61.9% of the participants found the makeup in American horror films to be more successful, and 46.1% preferred watching American horror films.
