Challenges of interculturalism in contemporary Kosovo
Session
Education and Development
Description
Due the political economic and social crisis in Kosovo, two parallel educational systems exist. Schools attended by Albanian, Bosnian and Turk students work according to regulations of Kosovo Ministry of Education while schools attended by Serb and Goran students work according to regulations of Serbian Ministry of Education. Moreover, the schools are also physically separated so that Serb and Albanian youth do not have opportunities to communicate or create friendships, which causes very low intercultural sensitivity by the Kosovo students. The ESL textbooks recommended by the ministries of education were examined on cultural content in order to design a strategy aiming the increase of intercultural competences of the Kosovo high school students, by using additional ESL textbooks that contain cultural elements of the ethnicities that live in Kosovo.
