Historical Records for Architectural Research: Sahabiye Neighborhood

Session

Architecture and Spatial Planning

Description

Changes in the political/social/economic structure in the modernization process targeted by the foundation of the Republic had an impact on all built environments as well as architecture. Urban development and new neighborhoods were planned according to targets. “Sahabiye Neighborhood”, one of the first modern neighborhoods in Kayseri, Turkey, is a qualified district revealing the transition from traditional to modern architecture. Nowadays, closeness to city center, accessibility, and significant investments in the district have caused a tremendous increase in rent. Local governments have seen a need for comprehensive gentrification and have started to implement it. It is possible to claim that the rich history, memory, and experiences of the neighborhood are in danger of disappearing with this project. In this poster, the first results of a “local history research on architecture” will be shared about the region, which contains information about the social and architectural development of Kayseri. As a result, a discussion on modern architecture between 1950-1970 will be developed with the selected examples.
