The organ factory: a speculative framework of future typologies
Session
Integrated Design
Description
The thesis addresses the near future in which cities are shaped by the transitory nature of the worldwide population and airport cities begin to absorb typologies which were previously indigenous to densely populated urban environments. Through conventional practices of urban analysis and the study of precedents, the research focuses heavily on constructing a speculative narrative for the sprawling airport region in Amsterdam. As one of the emerging passenger-driven typologies, the Organ factory is embedded into the core of the Schiphol airport Corridor. It is a hyper-specialized transplantation hospital which processes patients from a wider European region and distributes freshly bio manufactured organs abroad. The project is a typological and architectural conclusion to the question of facilitating global demands and local urbanity in the future. It investigates the hospital as a fundamentally urban type and applies it to the doubtfully urban condition of airport cities.
