Respiratory Emergencies in Dental Practice: Pathophysiology and Management

Session

Dental Science

Description

Respiratory emergencies are among the most common issues encountered in dental practice and can be critical threats to patient safety. These emergencies can quickly escalate to cardiac emergencies; therefore, it is vital for dentists to possess comprehensive knowledge of each type of respiratory emergency and to manage them swiftly and effectively. This paper aims to present the pathophysiology and clinical symptomatology associated with respiratory emergencies, equipping health professionals with the necessary knowledge to identify at-risk patients. Additionally, it provides essential information on respiratory emergency management protocols. The methodology employed in this study involved a review of the literature regarding respiratory emergencies occurring during dental interventions. Data were sourced from articles and academic texts available in electronic databases, including MedLine Plus, Medscape, IntechOpen, and PubMed. Conclusion: Rapid assessment and efficient management of respiratory emergencies, guided by the basic life support algorithm (PABCD), are crucial for ensuring continuous oxygenated blood supply to the patient's brain. This approach can effectively address life-threatening situations that may arise during dental interventions.
