Description

Introduction Quality of life related to oral health is negatively affected by dental anxiety as well as negative perception of appearance, affecting the treatment process. Few studies have investigated dental anxiety in patients receiving orthodontic treatment. Purpose This study aimed to determine the presence of dental anxiety among adolescents aged 12-18 and how its presence affects the oral health. Materials and methods 112 patients, aged 12-18, of both genders, were included, during the treatment in the Panacea Private Clinic, in Vitia and Ferizaj, in period May-June 2024. The cross-sectional study, was based on administering questionnaires of sociodemographic status, Oral Health Perception Status, test MCDAS and ACDAS of anxiety level, and Gingivitis Index Scale. Results: Average age of total sample was 16.04 ±2.177, orthodontic group included 54(48.2%) and non-orthodontic group 58(51.8%), 62(55.45%) were females and 50(44.6%) males, urban residence 46(41, 1%) and rural 66(58.9%). Excellent perception of oral health had 35(31.3%), very good 50(44.6%), good 21(18.8%) and average 6 (5.4%) . A significant difference in anxiety averages was found between the orthodontic vs non-orthodontic group, MCDAS p-0.02, ACDAS p-0.05, as well as significant differences in the index of the presence of gingivitis p-0.01. Conclusion Adolescents in non-orthodontic treatment show a higher level of anxiety and a higher index of the presence of gingivitis compared to orthodontic patients. It is recommended that in the future the assessment of anxiety and perception of oral health during dental and orthodontic treatment of adolescents should be taken into consideration.
