Education and Development
Description
Cosmopolitanism and globalization are reshaping societies worldwide. As English is the lingua franca nowadays it is necessary to deepen and shape the knowledge of professionals of different fields so that they adapt culturally, linguistically and professionally in any environment. One of the sectors mostly involved is the healthcare system, as it is multinational and multilingual. So, the need to teach Medical English arises and is a must for any student involved in medical related fields. Medical terminology also encompasses words of Greek and Latin origin, neoclassical compounds; thus, it is consistent and uniform across many languages throughout the world. Students of Veterinary Medicine at the Agricultural University of Tirana are taught this module in the 1st year as a compulsory module. There is generally positive feedback, but there are of course difficulties while studying this module. Medical English is taught in context specific situations. In addition to advantages and disadvantages of teaching Medical English the paper will present a questionnaire with the students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to identify the different approaches they have towards this ESP English as compared to General English from their previous education.
