The Impact of Art and Creative Expression on the Development of Students with Autism in The Pre-University Education System: A Qualitative Study with a Linguistic Focus

Session

Education and Development

Description

Children with autism often encounter challenges related to the development of language and communication skills. For most of them, this may involve difficulties in using verbal language, understanding complex expressions, and effectively interacting with others. Art, as a form of creative expression, plays a fundamental role in the linguistic development of children with autism. The use of art in the educational context for this particular group can help in several significant ways, such as improving communication, stimulating verbal language and expressions, utilizing visualizations and their tools, as well as promoting social communication and interaction. To conduct this study, analytical and comparative methods were followed. Through observations and interviews with children on the autism spectrum in various schools in Albania, data were collected and analyzed, identifying the benefits of artistic and creative activities in neurodevelopmental aspects, improving reading, writing, and other language skills of students with autism in the pre-university education system. Through this analysis, drawing upon literature from various researchers such as Dr. Patricia Howlin and Dr. Connie Kasari, recommendations and strategies are aimed to be provided for the use of art and creative expression methods in the pre-university school curriculum to enhance language training and communication of students with autism.Studies and applied practices have proven that art provides a significant platform for the development of both verbal and non-verbal language in these children. Thus, it is worth emphasizing that the integration of art and creative expression into educational strategies for children with autism not only enhances their artistic experience but also contributes to building a sustainable foundation for their overall development, preparing them for better engagement in society and academic life.
