Description

This paper examines the historical significance and development of classical music festivals, starting from a global context, then focusing on the Balkan region, and narrowing down to the national context of Kosovo. The main focus of the paper is the Skena Muzikore e Prishtinës (SMP) festival, which was founded in 1974 as the first event dedicated to classical music in Kosovo. Skena Muzikore e Prishtinës emerged as a necessity for the promotion of composers and performers from Kosovo, while also becoming a platform to foster regional collaborations and cultural exchanges among musicians at a time when Kosovo was one of the least developed regions in the area. The paper analyzes the factors that led to the founding of SMP, the role of cultural institutions, and the support from the artistic community. From 1974 to 1988, Skena Muzikore e Prishtinës significantly contributed to the development of musical life in Kosovo and established a respected tradition in the promotion of classical music. Through this festival, Kosovo’s musical creativity was encouraged within a broader Balkan and international context. This event remains the initial activity in this field; hence, this year not only marks the 50th anniversary of its founding but also celebrates the extraordinary importance the festival had in the overall artistic context, paving the way for many festivals and musical activities that followed, especially after the year 2000.
