The Role of Nurses in the Prevention of Decubitus

Session

Medicine and Nursing

Description

Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, are wounds caused by prolonged pressure on specific areas of the body. This paper aims to raise awareness among medical staff and, through them, educate patients about the causes of pressure ulcers and the role of nurses in preventing and managing them. The primary challenge in treating pressure ulcers is preventing infections, as they often become contaminated with bacteria, leading to tissue degradation, purulent discharge, and foul odors. The nurse's role is crucial in preventing and managing these ulcers. Proper patient positioning and movement, alongside regular skin care, are vi- tal in preventing the occurrence of pressure ulcers. The study presents a quantitative analysis, based on data from hospitals in Kosovo, regarding the incidence of pressure ulcers, their classification, and anatomical distribution. Findings indicate that ulcers are most frequently observed in the sacral region and predominantly affect older male patients. This study highlights the essential nursing interventions required to prevent the occurrence of pressure ulcers, emphasizing regular patient movement, skin care, and the appropriate use of pressure-relieving devices.
