The Inclusion of Kinship Terms in School Textbooks, Grades 1–9
Session
Language and Culture
Description
This study examines the inclusion of kinship terms in primary and lower secondary school textbooks (grades 1–9) in Kosovo, viewing these terms as carriers of linguistic, cultural, and social values. Kinship terms such as mother, father, sister, brother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, cousin, and others constitute an essential part of the basic lexicon of the Albanian language and play a significant role in the socialization process of younger generations. The analysis was conducted through the method of content analysis, based on a corpus of school textbooks approved by educational institutions in Kosovo and Albania. The findings show that kinship terms appear with varying frequency across different school levels, being used more frequently in the lower grades (1–5) in narrative and educational contexts, while in the upper grades (6–9) their presence is more limited and mainly associated with literary or historical texts. The study emphasizes that the use of kinship terms in school textbooks serves a dual function: linguistic, as part of the normative lexicon, and cultural, as a mechanism for preserving collective identity and transmitting family values to younger generations.
