“Raising Awareness Today and Building Markets Tomorrow” The Role of Visual Arts in Kosovo
Session
Art and Digital Media
Description
This paper provides a critical analysis of the dual role of visual arts in Kosovo, focusing on their function as instruments for raising societal awareness and as emerging assets within the national and regional cultural economy. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that combines cultural studies, economics, and visual art theory, the study examines how visual arts contribute to public consciousness, identity construction, and post-conflict cultural recovery. Simultaneously, it evaluates the structural and economic dimensions of the visual arts sector, analyzing the current state of the Kosovar art market through qualitative interviews, policy review, and comparative market data from the Western Balkans. Findings indicate that while Kosovo’s visual arts community demonstrates strong creative output and growing public interest, systemic barriers—such as limited state funding, inadequate institutional infrastructure, and weak integration into international art circuits—continue to inhibit market development. However, evidence also suggests increasing opportunities for expansion through digital platforms, art education, diaspora engagement, and cultural policy reform. The paper concludes by proposing a set of strategic interventions aimed at fostering a sustainable art ecosystem that balances the cultural mission of visual arts with the imperatives of market growth. These include policy recommendations, investment in creative infrastructure, and mechanisms for international mobility and exchange. Ultimately, this research underscores the potential of visual arts to act as both a mirror of Kosovo’s evolving identity and a driver of socio-economic development.
