MANUS x MACHINA
Session
Fashion
Description
Technology is helping fashion to advance not only towards a more environment- freindly industry but also is pushing it's consumers to be more aware of the changing times. At a time when technology is being used in fashion more and more in every aspect of the industry, and ready-made fashion has become the norm, it is imperative that we re-examine the hand/machine dichotomy through the times. “The Mediator between the Hand and he Machine must be the Heart”- epigram from the movie Metropolis (1927) by Fritz Lang. The emergence of the Haute Couture coincided with the inception of the sewing machine by Barthelemy Thimonnier in 1829, refined by Elias Howe in 1849 and perfected by Isaac Singer in 1851. Furthermore, this machine/ hand duality in fashion will be illustrated using creative visuals.
